THAILANDIA

Overview

Thailand is the ideal choice for those people who want to find a destination where sea, culture and contact with nature are in perfect harmony.
It is the perfect place for all economic possibilities and for all life styles. Thailand can satisfy the needs of travellers looking for exclusive and sophisticated solutions but also of "low cost" tourists. Thailand, also well-known as the "Land of Smiles", is one of the Asian countries which is mostly loved by the "made in Italy" tourism and is the perfect example of an East within reach everybody would like to visit sooner or later. The passport to this wonderful world is a flight of about twelve hours, maybe with a short stay of a couple of days in its dynamic capital. In spite of the economic development and the wild urbanization which, in the last years, have partially cancelled the signs for which the city had been awarded the title of "Venice of the East", Bangkok is still a metropolis able to evoke suggestions of the ancient times. A simple tour is not enough to know this city, which requires instead time and patience to be visited. Phuket is the halting-place for those who choose Thailand as the destination of their holidays; it is located on the upper coast of the Andaman Sea and comprises some of the most wonderful beaches in south-eastern Asia. The name derives from the word bukit which means hill. The city develops on a smooth slope with a small village where the time seems to have stopped. From the airplane Phuket already appears charming and variable in its irregular shapes and it is loved for its contrasts, its unexplored beaches and the horizons of white sand.

Historical outline

The history of Thailand has ancient roots, it seems that some regions of the country were inhabited already ten million years ago. The first descendants of the "Thai" race, Sino-Tibetan people, settled in the area around the end of the thirteenth century. Some ten years later they founded the kingdom of Ayutthaya, or Siam, thus starting a series of conquests. The first conquest dates back to 1431, with the occupation of the kingdom of Kmer and Angkor. In the eighteenth century Chao Phaya Chakri proclames himself King with the name of Rama I (this dynasty is still reigning today), and decides to move the capital to Bangkok with the aim of adjusting the state regulations and making the culture of its country, the "Thai" culture, flourish again. The absolute monarchy lasted till 1932 when, under the reign of Rama VII, a coup converted the country into a Constitutional Monarchy which started a long phase of political instability culminating in 1873 with the famous student riots. Such revolts caused the death of almost 400 people. The reinstatement of the popular sovereignty and the democratic elections occurred in 1992, when the current constitutional system was drawn.
