SAINT LUCIA

Overview

Saint Lucia belongs to the Caribbean archipelago. It is famous for its luxuriant vegetation and its rainforest and it is becoming one of the most required tourist destinations for people who want to spend a holiday far from the usual mass-tourism locations.
It is a tiny strip of land with a lot of things to visit. Although being destroyed several times by fire, its capital, for example, has a lot to offer to tourists: first of all, the natural port which was the cause of many battles between English and French troops. Nearby is the traditional and lively market and from here a short walk will take you in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. But the beauties of Saint Lucia are even others: the coast formed by wonderful beaches and the twin volcanic spires Gros Piton and Petit Piton. Now you just have to pack your suitcases and start your excursion. Saint Lucia will astonish you!

Historical outline

It seems that the Caribbean islands were inhabited already in the stone age by the Ciboney, a nomadic community. Such theory is supported by some archaeological sites with some findings dating back to six thousand years ago and referable to the Ciboney. Around the IV century BC the island was settled by the Arawaks, a well organized population given to the cultivation of tobacco, cocoa, cotton and "yam", a sort of potato. Their presence was first threatened by the Caribs, a warlike community coming from South America and afterwards it was definitively destroyed by slavery, wars and epidemics. In 1502, during his fourth travel, Christopher Columbus was the first Westerner to land on the island of Saint Lucia, starting the modern history of this country. Some historians state, on the contrary, that the first European to reach the island was Francois Le Clerc, a French pirate of the XVI century. Thanks to its geographic position, and in particular to the natural strategic port of Castries, Saint Lucia was claimed both by France and Great Britain. In the period between the XVII and the XVIII century, this much desired island changed flags 14 times. The English crown gained the final ruling power only in 1814, when the Treaty of Paris was signed which definitely ceded the island to Great Britain. After a long period of British dominion, Saint Lucia was first part of the Federation of West Indies from 1958 to 1962, it gained internal autonomy in 1967 while full independence was reached on the 22nd of February 1979. Today the country is an Independent Republic member of the British Commonwealth.
